Seattle Fire Station 32 Structural Assessment

Integrated Design Engineers performed a structural assessment of Seattle Fire Station 32 as part of the City of Seattle on-call services contract held by ARC Architects. We also performed a seismic upgrade study for the apparatus bay and the station tower to meet the immediate occupancy level performance in earthquakes.

Through assessment, we found the building to lack a complete lateral load path, which meant the building would perform poorly in seismic events such as an earthquake.

To solve this issue, we provided conceptual details of structural enhancements that included strengthening the roof diaphragm, attaching the diaphragm to shear walls, and additional strengthening of the roof and exterior walls.
